A Day in My Life

Posted in Life with tags , on April 28, 2008 by abraxus

At around 8 PM last night my wife decided it would be superspiffycool if we could go to “The City” today. Some Geographical enlightenment: We live 385km away from “The City” With our fancy Canadian cars and measurements of speed that means we are just shy of 4 hours away from “The City” at the legally allowed Speed Limit.

This means we got up at 7 AM to get to our destination at 11 AM. That’s just getting to the edge of it mind you, not the additional 30 minutes of drive time through traffic to reach our goal, the WEM. Our purpose? To buy her a new PC. Our Results? $210 in Anime, $76 in Old Navy, $105 in the T&T Market, $86 at Payless and about $77 in Manga. You’ll notice no new PC on that list. She’s a fickle one she is.

Fun was had. Risked life and limb in cutting approx. 90 minutes off our travel time both there AND back again (Hobbits FTW!) whilst avoiding the lovely gentlemen of the R.C.M.P. who can only “Get Their Man” if they know their man is there to be had apparently.

Off Topic I stopped by Danalyn’s Blog to wish her a Happy Birthday on behalf of Yoshi ( I think this was a clever plot to see just how much he could irritate her…curse me for being so easy to manipulate!). She was having a lovely time explaining how dim the Geek Squad can be at times. I had many things like that happen to me when I was in the field of PC maintenance lo these many years ago before I found out I liked Cooking alot more than my old job. I wasn’t even trained in any formal sense, I used my common sense but I daresay even I might be over-qualified to work for Geek Squad based on her Post.

Editted to remove my embarrassing typographical incompetence.

Watching things about Uwe Boll is more interesting than watching a Film by Uwe Boll. You’d think that someone would have mentioned this to Uwe by now eh? Click the link to see the latest foolishness.

All of this fell in approximately 32 hours, that’s my Driveway…I am standing about oh…30 feet from the end of it. Snowblowers are my friends.

New Telemaphone

Posted in Life with tags on April 14, 2008 by abraxus

Yes, that’s right. I, the man with a all the portable things that money can buy have bought a new Cell Phone. Now, let me preface this by saying I don’t need or want a phone that can play MP3’s, Surf the Net, Tell me how lost I am to within 2 inches anywhere on the globe, check email, IM or take Photos. I want a Phone that’s *gasp* a friggin PHONE!

Apparently they don’t make those any longer so I got this instead.

Which does all the things I just said I didn’t need…le sigh.

Anime

It has been brought to my fleeting attention span that I perhaps watch too much Anime. Let us examine this.

Yesterday a friend of mine came over to visit and asked me if I had seen the latest Naruto and Bleach DVDs out for sale. Now I know he only asks me because he likes to borrow them from me when I pick them up so he can watch them. I told my friend that I had them, loaned them to him and a few hours later got a call from him wanting to talk about the latest Episode of Naruto. I said sure I’d love to talk about it but when he started in I was confused. I had just watched the latest Episode of Naruto a few days ago (the ‘latest’ Episode being #220 or so) and he was describing things from years ago. Then I remembered he was watching the DVDs which are only up to around Episode 80ish.

I told him my mistake and he said I was an Anime-Geek. So out of spite I told him that the latest Episode of Bleach I had seen was #166 and he was only on 33 to which I got a lovely, “You asshole!” Somehow though it made me feel better.

It’s not MY fault he can’t stand to read Subs so he has to wait for the Dubs =P So yeah, I suppose that makes me an entry level Otaku. It’s a burden I bear with broad shoulders *nod*

Allow me to make a horrible segue for a moment and ask the Bloggy Community in general, “Has anyone seen our dear Pandora? I haven’t heard a peep out of her in what seems like forever.”

Writing

Posted in Life with tags on April 9, 2008 by abraxus

I love to write, I’d love to do it to the exclusion of many things. Professionally? I don’t think I am that good but personally, among my circle of friends I enjoy writing things for them. Most all of my friends are gamers in some form or another with original characters they play in whatever game world. I like to write stories for them involving their characters, that is my own personal passion.

That being said I do not write when people are around. I can only get into the right frame of mind when I am alone and lately that just isn’t happening at all. I find it very frustrating but there is not much I can do about it short of telling people to leave me alone so I can do it and I would never do that because it would be rude of me.

Long story..well not short I guess. I have a few ideas I want to write about and I am waiting for time to do it…but it’s looking like maybe next Tuesday before I will get the time.

I know everyone who reads this has something they love to do, games, movies, reading whatever turnsĀ  your crank. Now imagine you really want to do this thing that you love to do and something keeps preventing you from doing it. This is my life right now. Grawr!

At least I have my books to get lost in while I wait.

You know the deal…just when I thought I was out…Puzzle Quest pulled me back in! Thanks in no small part to a Post on my friend Pandora’s Blog put there by Yoshi. Curse you…I couldn’t find it for my DS for some reason (i think I loaned it to a friend) so I went out and bought it for the PC.

Now for those of you not already addicted/aware of this game go Click the Puzzle Quest Link Above now.

What I love the most about this game is the pick up and play aspect. There is no lengthy load, getting into the Action is quick and easy. Best of all though, there is no death. There is Defeat but no Death. You lose a match and all that happens is you have to try try again or perhaps go hone your skills some more on an Opponent more suited to your skill level.

Something of note for my fellow PQ Addicts is they are making a Sci-Fi Version of the game!

Oh and not to be outdone…the mention of PQ got me thinking about a former Guilty Pleasure of mine and so I Double Dare all my readers to go and try Progress Quest!

Some things just never get old

Take April Fools Day for instance. In the world that I live in, which is Online Gaming mostly, there is a long-standing tradition of silly April Fools jokes on Company Websites. I admit when I first started my MMO Career back with the original EverQuest I found these things totally hilarious not so much for the amusement value as for the shock and outrage it provoked within the die-hard gamers out there. Since I left EverQuest lo these many years ago (Geez I feel ancient right now it’s been like 8 years since I played EQ) I’ve moved on to other games, Guild Wars, EverQuest II, Rappelz, Conquer Online, Eve Online and of course the grandpappy of them all World of WarCraft. In every instance there was the tradition of April Fools trickery and it was fun…until a few years ago I started to realize it was less about amusement and more about expectation on the part of the client base. That’s when the fun went out of April Fools for me.

April Fools is a day for everyone to let out their inner devil and do something both amusing and treacherous to loved ones, friends and co-workers for the sake of getting a simple laugh out of the ridiculous situation. That’s all it’s supposed to be, not some massive event akin to a Holiday Celebration. I want to get back to that and not let April Fools end up being the commercialized mess that most modern Days of Celebration have become.

Some things never get old…and some things need to act their age.
