Here we go

So the first half of the Renovations to the restaurant are supposed to be done today, this morning we were set to reopen to the public with the Family side of things. I wouldn’t know. Why you ask? Well I seem to have buggered up my knee last night. Wasn’t doing anything stupid or outlandish. I was trying to get into my car like I have a thousand times before and suddenly it felt like someone had taken a hammer to my kneecap. Pain I am used too but this sort of hurt was the kind of thing you can’t just block out because it varies in strength and intensity.

So I hobbled my way back to the house and onto the couch where I liberally applied A5-35 to my knee area. It seemed after further investigation that it was not so much my knee as a either a muscle or tendon around my knee. I elevated it and let it alone for about 3 hours, moving it every now and then to see if it still hurt (it did). About 4 hours later I moved my leg by accident, it slipped off the pillow I had it propped up on, and oddly the pain was MUCH less than it had been. So I experimented by standing up and sure enough, the pain was largely gone. Very odd…but I went to bed thankful that I was able to sleep at all as I had expected to be up all night in extreme discomfort.

Moving ahead to this morning I woke up still feeling alright, made my way upstairs to the shower and all was good. Until I went to come back downstairs…two steps down on the stairs and the pain was back exactly the same as it was last night. I was moving slowly, taking my time and it didn’t change a thing. So I hobbled my way downstairs once more to sit on the couch with the A5-35, called in to work and told them I would not be in today and again…three hours later it does not hurt. I can walk pretty much normally (I am being paranoid and taking it extremely easily right now) and the pain is extremely minimal.

This marks my 4th day off from work. I HATE that. I do not like being off work more than two days at a stretch so I was looking forward to going back since I’d had three days off while the construction guys finished the restaurant. Now I am on my fourth day and going more than a little stir crazy. I want to work but I am afraid to re-injure my leg…it is very annoying!

So that’s Thursday in a nutshell I guess.

So yeah, it’s -22F outside right now and snowing like crazy all over the place. Did I mention that with the wind it’s -47F? Yep. Not alot for swearing but it’s FUCKING cold outside. To make matters worse I will have to go outside on my day off to shovel an 80′ Driveway that’s been drifting in heavy snow for almost two days now. Wee.

Trials and Tribulations

So I play alot of Hellgate: London. What can I say, I’ve played so damn many Fantasy related games in my time online that I am just plain tired of seeing Elves and Dwarves and Gnomes all over the place. Hellgate is a great game that I highly recommend and again as I have mentioned before it’s easy on the older Systems which has been a boon to me for sure since my system is three-ish years old now.

That brings me to two days ago when I was happily playing away whilst my wife was doing her own thing. I was in the middle of an extended leg of the game meaning if I stopped where I was all my current progress would be lost and I would have to start anew next time I logged in. Needless to say I did not want to stop until I reached the end. Valiantly I fought onward until at last I had only one more task to accomplish before I could log out for the night.

And then the power went out.

Enraged is a good word for what I was at that time, but I am not one to hold onto rage when it serves no purpose. This had/has happened before in our house, she’d an older gal our house and her wiring isn’t the best. By that I mean the entire basement is wired onto a single circuit and was never really intended for use other than a laundry room and storage. We have the whole thing furnished as a living/game area for ourselves, both our PCs are down there, the big TV with the game systems attached as well as the nice surround system etc etc.

What we learned early on was that the plug by the bar we put in could only run one item at a time or the circuit breaker would trip and the basement would lose power. So we try never to do that, especially if we’re using the PCs because they are touchy about that sort of thing.

Getting back to the power going out on me right as I was in the last leg of my game it turned out she was cooking something in the toaster oven and decided she wanted tea at the same time so on went the kettle. That’s One more item than the circuit can handle. So darkness was my friend. Cue the rage, which I let slide easily enough etc etc. She apologized profusely and I rebooted to see how much work I would need to redo.

SO I get into the game and things look…strange…I can’t quite put my finger on it until I try to move and suddenly the graphics go right down to the seventh level of Hell. I’m getting corrupted images and distorted textures everywhere I look and it quickly makes the game unplayable. Cue the next round of “I’m sorry honey!” from my wife and again I let it go. It sucks since this is the one thing I really enjoy doing on my PC but what can you do right? I try a few more times to no avail, uninstall, reinstall etc etc ad infinitum and after two days of tinkering I got it to work half ass decently just a while ago.

It’s clear my PC is on it’s last legs now, the CD Drive is refusing to read anything but DVDs at the moment, my Install of XP crashes on 1 in 5 startups and now the Vid Card only runs properly on some pretty dumbed down settings.

I went around with her today for a bit to see what was out there locally for potential new systems and 1.3k gets me a nice rig but that’s about $400 more than I wanted to spend. Then I get the, “Well if you’re getting a new one I want a new one too.” which means I need to find two systems in the range of $1300 TOTAL. That’s $650 per system. Pardon my language but that buys you sweet fuck all when it comes to a PC these days.

So yes, Trials and Tribulations.

Reading, Writing & ‘Rithmetic

Reading a surprisingly good setting book by Mel Odom. Those of you who read Setting Books often (those are books set in a world which is not the Authors own…at least that’s what I call them anyway) will know Mel from his fine work for TSR or Wizards of the Coast depending on how old you are. He does excellent work as a whole and has won a few literary awards for it. Since I am as old as dirt now I was around when he first came out with a Novel in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting in the “Threat from the Deep” series. I’ve tried to follow his writing ever since.

At the moment his latest offering is Hellgate: Exodus which is based on the PC game Hellgate: London from the boys over at Flagship Stuidos whom you might remember from such games as Diablo and Diablo II. Since I have been a fanboy of those games since I owned a PC it was only natural I check out the new Hellgate game and it is a lovely creation that does it’s job of entertaining and drawing the player in quite well. It even plays decently on older PCs such as mine so I was much pleased with it overall.

Now add to this the fact that my friend Vicki loves games like this and has been looking for an excuse to jump ship from World of Warcraft and we both took to it like fish to water. A few days after we’d started playing together she mentioned to me that there was a novel series and she was reading the first book by “Some guy named Odom?” and I about peed myself when I asked “Mel Odom” and she confirmed it. I was out of my chair and off to the bookstore like a kid in a candy store. I was lucky enough to get the last copy they had of Mel’s new book and I am halfway through it now. Awesome book, Nuff Said. If you like anything Arcane or Sci-Fi this book will appeal to you on a deep level I think. It has my official recommendation!

While I was at the bookstore the owners (who know us by name since they get about $60-100 a month from us) asked me if I had ever written anything since I was such an avid reader. I told them I had written a few short pieces but hadn’t found the time or inspiration to really try anything close to a novel. Turns out they have writing classes at the bookstore every month so I might have to go check that out. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at writing something longer than a short story so perhaps this will work out for me.

And now for the ‘Rithmetic portion…my PC is on its last um Megs? I don’t know…anyway I need a new PC and today I learned that getting such a beast is going to run me over 1k so..ouch. Don’t have that and won’t for a while at least not to drop on a new PC anyway so hopefully the old girl holds up for me a few months longer.

That’s it for now!

Tres Bizarre!

Well with the renovations ongoing where I work the days have been predictably dull as people try to figure out if we are open at all. I went in to work this morning only to notice that one of my co-workers was absent. When I inquired about it I got the usual, “Went home sick” that happens from time to time in any workplace.

Later on though I find out that the poor woman may have pneumonia or a similar problem and likely won’t be around for several days at least. I shrugged and offered my well wishes by proxy and went about covering for the absentee. Even later on this morning I get called into the Managers Office. It seems that with the renovation happening she’s trimmed hours all over the place and without our sickly colleague there will only be one person to run the kitchen during the afternoon. This is a no no. There are Five stations in the Kitchen and if we get even remotely busy it just doesn’t work to have one person running around like headless poultry.

So I had a choice. I could offer to take up the shifts that were left vacant or continue on in my own shifts while one of the Kitchen Managers would take over the free shifts. I jumped on it and hung on like a cowboy on a bull.

So now for the next week I have only Day Shifts. Hahahafuckingawesomeha! Three years I worked Split Shifts every day and finally I get a string of Days! Yay me!

*snoppy dance*

That is all (for now)

Free At Last!

Posted in Rants on January 15, 2008 by abraxus

Finally I am free from the cycle of IPod abuse. By “Abuse” I mean the perpetual flood of new IPods twice a year by the folks over at Apple. While I applaud their desire to constantly push the technology of personal music devices I am finally drawing my line in the sand and saying, “No more!” IPod technology has gotten even more out of hand than PCs these days. Not two months after you buy a shiny new IPod you can check out Apples Website for the even newer and shinier version with more features, better battery life and more storage space and at the same price as your outdated one.

Had Apple gone to an Annual release format I might still be an avid fan of their IPod but this has gotten to be irritating and I won’t shell out for a new IPod every 4-6 months. I still like my IPod, don’t misunderstand me,  but like many people these days I find it extremely offputting to know that in a mere 3 months something bigger and better will come along for the same price. It gives me the impression that these companies are merely pawning off their junk of me so that they can get to the business of releasing the “really” good items.

I guess as a consumer I am finally fed up with it. At least with a PC I can buy a new one and upgrade for a fraction of the price to get about 5 solid years out of it before I need a new one.

In other news the Renovations are well under way at the Restaurant and wow was it totally dead the first day. I think all the Contractors vehicles and plywood over the windows are giving people the impression that we are entirely closed which is not good seeing as how we are half open. In either regard I am happy with the slower periods as it is allowing me and the rest of the crew to get caught up on our rainy day tasks like replacing/repairing some of the items in the kitchen which needed it. Hopefully when we re-open on the 14th of February full time we’ll have the whole place tuned in nicely.

Oh and a bizarre link for you: Knicker Picker
