Twilight – Spoiler Free

Posted in Books, Games, Health with tags , , , on January 29, 2009 by abraxus

So while I have been ‘convalescing’ I have of course been bored out of my mind as I am unable to sit at the PC for more than a few mintues at a time. Thankfully I expected this and so I bought a series of books by Stephanie Meyer. This is the ‘Twilight‘ Series which inspired the recent feature movie. In the last few days I have read all four of the books currently available.

It’s not a horrible series despite what others I know have had to say about it. This woman took the Vampire mythos and spun an interesting tale with it even if it is a bit derivative here and there. Of course given the insane number of things I have read and absorbed about Vampires I have a very ‘Been there done that’ attitude towards the subject matter. Still, it was an engaging story that kept me turning all 12oo or so cumulative pages of it.

It’s not the next greatest piece of literature to ever come out but for those of you that are occasional readers this story could well keep you absorbed for many days and nights. It has my recommendation.

Also I can see why they have such an enormous Fandom going for this series. There are all manner of subtle hints and paths not taken by the main story that a creative mind caught up in the world could well write for quite some time.

Also consuming some of my time is a Wii Game called ‘Endless Ocean‘ it’s actually quite entertaining, if you own a Wii I recommend it as well.

Tomorrow I think I might watch the currently available episodes of Stargate: Atlantis. Not being able to walk without resembling a penguin and suffering much pain limits my options when it comes to entertainment.

Allergies and Dining Out

Posted in Blogging Related, Health, Uncategorized, Work with tags , , , on January 2, 2009 by abraxus

Ok, for anyone wandering in here, I am a Cook by Profession.

On most Menu’s these days at any popular Restaurant you will usually see a notation similar to the following:

“If you have any Food Allergies please inform your Server.”

Now something needs to be said about this. If you are eating at any Restaurant and you have a Food Allergy (let’s use SeaFood as an example) and you plan to order a Chicken dish do you need to tell your Server that you are Allergic to SeaFood? Hells YES you do. a Person with Allergies it is YOUR obligation to inform your Server about ANY allergies you may have. Doesn’t matter if all you want is a Glass of Water.

Most Kitchens run with an average of 5 – 9 Cooks at a time working on various meals all at once. If you think that every surface is sanitized after every order you are mistaken and naive. If you believe that every cook washes their hands between every single food item they handle..then you guessed it, mistaken and naive.

Now what DOES happen if you inform your Server that you have a Food Allergy (at least in the Kitchen I work in at any rate and I hope ALL Kitchens are like this) is the Server tells the Cooks and then yes, EVERY thing is Sanitized and washed before that order is made and only untouched ingredients are used because we don’t want to see our Patrons falling over and choking to death in the Restaurant.

So what I am getting at is this: If you have a Food Allergy or know of a Food Allergy for someone in your party PLEASE speak up and make sure the Server knows about it before your party orders. Do it as a public service to Cooks everywhere and Me in particular.

Dental Update

Posted in Health with tags on May 6, 2008 by abraxus

Well after my checkup/Cleaning this morning I am pretty much good to go on the Orthodontic front. I hadn’t been in to see them for a checkup in several years (Universal Health Care covers only serious things and Dental does not count) so I was expecting worse but I got out in under two hours with only one bout of gagging and one small cavity which will be fixed next week.

On another note…it turns out I am ticklish on my upper gums. I scared the begeezus out of the Hygenist when she poked me there and I giggled. She thought I was gagging of course and when I told her it tickled she looked relieved.

Monday Meltdown ™*

Ah so we begin with a nod to milady Pandora over at her blog for giving me the impetus to Rant this fine Monday morning.

Our Renovations are thankfully almost over now but the sort of insanity we have had to deal with (which should NEVER have been staff concerns) has been phenomenal to say the least. Ideally we should have closed for the entire length of the Renovation but our Owner has partners and they wanted us open the whole time. So we have been dealing with the mess of a Renovation while trying to serve people decent food this whole time. That in and of itself is stressful. I take pride in my work and stand behind the food I sent out of the Kitchen but with all the mess everywhere it’s like walking through a mine field to send it out without it getting contaminated by Drywall dust, dirt and general crud from the Renovation.

Now that half the Restaurant is done and open with its new look a new set of problems has arisen. Cleaning the new place is becoming a chore because of the rules involved, new paint means no washing walls for 30 days, new tiles means we have to wash with sponges and not mops because the grout has to set, workers leaving tools and materials EVERYWHERE for us to trip over. Owner and her Partners trampling all over the place to whine and moan about speed, looks, details and a myriad of other things.

Topping them all though is Valentines Day. In the Restaurant business you have Two or Three Blockbuster days. Mothers Day, New Years and Valentines Day. When is Valentines this year? The Last scheduled day of the Renovation. Which means we have to help the Contractors in every way possible to get the other half of the Restaurant finished, dressed and open for the throngs of people that show up on Valentines every year.

In their rush to get things done things are getting broken and forgotten. Yesterday they tripped three breakers in the Kitchen at different times during the day. I don’t know how many of you have ever worked in a Kitchen before but when one thing goes down during a rush it gets overlooked for a long while until the noise dies down and someone realizes there’s a problem.

All day yesterday the Owner was in the Restaurant, she’s a lovely woman that I have MUCH respect for, getting in everyones way and generally being the wrench in the machine for us. We KNOW how to run the Kitchen, let us DO it for crying out loud. YES the Quality Assurance Inspector is one of the guys coming down to “help” (holy loose terms Batman!) us get things done for the 13th & 14th but he’s NOT going to be doing a QA report on us. There’s no need for us all to be in scrubbing the nooks and crannies with toothbrushes on our hands and knees when we have more important things to be doing.

Last night was almost the straw that broke my back. Mid-Dinner service and we get a visit from a Manager saying, “You guys need to make sure you’re not just standing around when you’re not busy, there’s lots of work to be done so find something to do.” I’m sorry but the Dinner service is the busiest time of the day, our task is to get the food made, cooked and out to the customer as fast as humanly possible for the three hour period that the rush usually lasts. Coming into the Kitchen in the middle of that to tell me I am not doing enough? That’s a damn ass fast way to get told to fuck right off. If I have two minutes between bills where I am not running to get more stock or helping someone else to stock their station I am sure as bloody hell going to take a moment and do what relaxing I can. Making matters a little worse the Manager who came in to drop that little gem of wisdom is a DAY shift Manager who hasn’t worked a Dinner service in over a year meaning she has no clue what it’s like these days. (Business has grown for us every single year I have worked there…I’m sure it grew before I started there too..not trying to be all “I’m the reason this place does so well.” hehe)

Enough about work, on to the personal Ranty sort of things.

I have, in the past, had trouble with my eyes and apparently nerves if you ask my Doctor. A few year ago I lost alot of feeling in my extremities for a period of about…2 months or so, which was accompanied by some visual issues like one eye was focusing on things at a different range then the other giving me a sort of double vision. I made an appointment to get checked out, was referred to a specialist when the “usual” suspects were ruled out and unfortunately in the time it took them to get me an appointment for an MRI my symptoms had alleviated themselves so the MRI turned up very little of interest and thusly my Doctor shrugged and threw up his hands (paraphrasing of course). Well a couple times in the last two months I have had a new sort of visual problem, sort of a kaleidoscope effect obscures a small portion of my visual field.

It’s similar to what happens when you get a sun-spot on your eye from looking at something bright, that little point of light that takes a while to go away and gets in your way of seeing things properly for a short time. Same idea but this ones is a cascade of colors as if I were looking partly through a kaleidoscope. In both instances I had not had enough sleep and was suffering from a fairly severe headache so right now I am writing it down as perhaps a minor migraine.

Scary though, have to say that… while it is happening I tend to get very depressed and worried, which leads to anxiety, lack of sleep, the Dark get the idea. I made an appointment to get in to the Doctor again though just to keep him up to date. Course it’s next week at the earliest they can get me in so of course by then he’ll have nothing to see. Ah well.

Ok all done!

*Trademark is just me being amusing 🙂

Here we go

Posted in Health, Work with tags , , on January 31, 2008 by abraxus

So the first half of the Renovations to the restaurant are supposed to be done today, this morning we were set to reopen to the public with the Family side of things. I wouldn’t know. Why you ask? Well I seem to have buggered up my knee last night. Wasn’t doing anything stupid or outlandish. I was trying to get into my car like I have a thousand times before and suddenly it felt like someone had taken a hammer to my kneecap. Pain I am used too but this sort of hurt was the kind of thing you can’t just block out because it varies in strength and intensity.

So I hobbled my way back to the house and onto the couch where I liberally applied A5-35 to my knee area. It seemed after further investigation that it was not so much my knee as a either a muscle or tendon around my knee. I elevated it and let it alone for about 3 hours, moving it every now and then to see if it still hurt (it did). About 4 hours later I moved my leg by accident, it slipped off the pillow I had it propped up on, and oddly the pain was MUCH less than it had been. So I experimented by standing up and sure enough, the pain was largely gone. Very odd…but I went to bed thankful that I was able to sleep at all as I had expected to be up all night in extreme discomfort.

Moving ahead to this morning I woke up still feeling alright, made my way upstairs to the shower and all was good. Until I went to come back downstairs…two steps down on the stairs and the pain was back exactly the same as it was last night. I was moving slowly, taking my time and it didn’t change a thing. So I hobbled my way downstairs once more to sit on the couch with the A5-35, called in to work and told them I would not be in today and again…three hours later it does not hurt. I can walk pretty much normally (I am being paranoid and taking it extremely easily right now) and the pain is extremely minimal.

This marks my 4th day off from work. I HATE that. I do not like being off work more than two days at a stretch so I was looking forward to going back since I’d had three days off while the construction guys finished the restaurant. Now I am on my fourth day and going more than a little stir crazy. I want to work but I am afraid to re-injure my leg…it is very annoying!

So that’s Thursday in a nutshell I guess.
